Project Narrative

The Psychology of the Commute

In a post-pandemic world, the line between "Living" and "Working" has blurred. For this custom residence in Dallas’s Uptown neighborhood, David Stumpf Architecture sought to re-establish that boundary through the built environment.

The design introduces a radical shift in the home office typology. Rather than burying a desk in a spare bedroom, the workspace is conceived as a distinct auxiliary volume, separated from the main house by a Solarium Breezeway. This architectural "gap" creates a physical and psychological transition. As the owner crosses through the light-filled, glass-enclosed corridor, they mentally "commute" to work—reducing occupational burnout by creating a clear spatial definition between professional focus and family relaxation.

Urban Infill & The "15-Second Commute"

Designed for a standard 50’ x 120’ urban infill lot, the home maximizes density without feeling crowded. The detached office suite on the first floor features its own private entry, allowing the owner to host clients professionally without bringing them into the private residence.

  • Flexibility: While designed as an executive office, this auxiliary wing includes a full bathroom, allowing it to easily convert into an in-law suite or guest casita as family needs evolve.

Biophilic Connection & Modern Flow

The main residence is anchored by a sculptural staircase, framed by two-story glazing that transforms circulation into Structural Art. The open-concept Great Room dissolves the barrier to the outdoors via a massive NanaWall system, folding away to merge the interior living space with the Dallas climate. Upstairs, the connection to nature continues. A covered outdoor terrace sits atop the breezeway, sheltering the main entry below while providing a private lounge for the second-floor bedrooms. The Master Suite, located at the rear for privacy, features a spa-inspired bathroom and a private balcony, ensuring that every occupant has direct access to fresh air and light.
